Digital asset giant Tether to launch ‘Official Stablecoin of Georgia’ in partnership with government

Tether announced plans to launch GEL?, a stablecoin pegged to the Georgian lari, in partnership with the Georgian government.

This announcement marks one of the first efforts to place a national currency directly on digital asset infrastructure under a regulatory framework specifically designed for stablecoins.

Tether’s USD? has a market capitalization close to $190 billion, with 24-hour trading volumes that regularly exceed Visa and Mastercard. Tether did not describe the asset as a central bank digital currency (CBDC).

FREEZE? aims to enable lower transaction costs, near-instant settlement and programmable payments. Georgia’s framework is designed to be compatible with the U.S. GENIUS Act, placing the country among the first countries to seek regulatory interoperability with the evolving U.S. digital assets framework.

According to Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether:

“Stablecoins are no longer a niche financial instrument. They are now part of the infrastructure layer of global finance. Georgia has taken early steps to create a serious regulatory architecture for digital assets and stablecoins, and this clarity creates the basis for real innovation and adoption.”

Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said Georgia is “laying the foundations for a more connected, transparent and digitally empowered financial world” through this partnership. Further details on the structure and deployment of GEL? will be announced later.
