El Salvador moves the Bitcoin reserve in several portfolios to reduce exposure to quantum attacks

Main to remember

  • El Salvador moves his Bitcoin reserves to several new addresses.
  • This decision aims to strengthen the security of the National Bitcoin Strategic Reserve against future technological risks.

El Salvador began to redistribute his national Bitcoin reserve through multiple fresh and unused addresses as part of a strategy aimed at stimulating security and mitigating the risks of quantum composition, according to an announcement by the National Bitcoin Office (ONBTC) of the country.

The office said that quantum computers could theoretically break the public-private key cryptography using Shor algorithm, which not only affects Bitcoin but also banking, e-mail and communications systems.

“When a Bitcoin transaction is signed and disseminated, the public key becomes visible on the blockchain, potentially exposing the address to quantum attacks which could discover private keys and redirect the funds before the transaction (is confirmed),” said ONBTC.

Previously, the country reused only one address for transparency, which continuously exhibited public keys. The new system, managed by ONBTC, maintains transparency via a dashboard displaying the total balance on all addresses while eliminating the need for addresses reuse.

After the transfer, each new portfolio will hold up to 500 bitcoin. Mononauaut, the founder of Mempool, said that El Salvador had distributed the funds through 14 new addresses.

At the time of writing this document, El Salvador held more than 6,280 BTC worth more than $ 680 million. The country continues to add a bitcoin per day to its treasure.

The conversation on quantum risks has circulated in the cryptographic community for years, but began to resume earlier this year after Google has unveiled Willow, a quantum chip which, she said, could solve certain calculation tasks in minutes.

Liberation has renewed concerns about Quantum Computing’s progress and its potential impact on Bitcoin cryptographic foundations.

The main concern revolves around the use by Bitcoin of the cryptography of the Elliptical Courbe (ECDSA) to protect private keys.

A sufficiently advanced quantum computer running the Shor algorithm could theoretically derive a private key from its public key, allowing attackers to forge digital signatures and fly funds, just like onbtc mentioned in its article.

For the moment, experts are largely suitable that current quantum computers do not have power and stability to constitute an immediate threat. However, developers and researchers explore cryptographic techniques resistant to quantum to secure Bitcoin and other networks for a future “quantum” era.
