Ethereum whales remain active as retail participation collapses – history offers a clue

Ethereum is struggling below $1,700 as apathy and uncertainty keep the market in a directionless state that has frustrated participants on both sides of the market. Price is neither convincingly recovering nor aggressively collapsing – and CryptoOnchain has identified a development in network activity data that directly counters the narrative that current weakness reflects a market in structural decline.

A notable divergence has emerged in Ethereum’s on-chain transaction patterns over the past week. Daily transactions from regular users’ wallets fell by around 43% – a drop that, read in isolation, would suggest that a network is losing engagement and relevance during a difficult market period. It is in this superficial reading that the analysis begins rather than ends.

Faced with this drop in the number of transactions, the average value moved per transaction jumped by more than 184%, with the median size of transfers increasing even more sharply. Ethereum processes fewer transactions, but the transactions it processes are considerably larger than those that preceded them.

The pattern that produces this specific combination is recognizable to anyone who has studied on-chain behavior during previous periods of market stress. Small routine participants withdraw, reduce their activity and wait for clarification. The largest holders continue to operate – moving their capital in fewer but larger transactions that reflect deliberate positioning rather than routine use of the network.

CryptoOnchain’s analysis argues that the divergence between falling transaction numbers and rising transfer values is not the signature of a network in decline. This is the signature of capital consolidating into fewer and more important hands at current price levels.

The configuration is consolidated

CryptoOnchain analysis connects transaction divergence to broader flow data that confirms the same pattern of behavior from multiple independent perspectives. Total net ETH flows remain deeply negative at around -79,080 ETH – with significant volumes continuing to leave exchanges consistently rather than accumulating on platforms where they would be available for immediate sale. The contraction in spot supply is real and continuing.

At the same time, new capital is positioning itself on Binance via the stablecoin channel. Net flows from Stablecoin to Binance turned strongly positive at +$34.4 million, a 440% increase over the 30-day average. Purchasing power arrives on the exchange at the same time ETH leaves it. Open interest on Binance increased by approximately 9% during the quarter, confirming that larger participants are quietly building derivatives exposure alongside stablecoin inflows.

The combination identified by the analysis is specific and historically recognizable. Retail participation dwindles as large entities cash out ETH and simultaneously store stablecoin liquidity on major exchanges, depicting a market structure in which available float tightens on the supply side while potential demand builds on the buyer side.

The honest framing of the report preserves things. This combination does not guarantee a reversal: structural configurations require catalysts to activate them. What he describes is the specific precondition that has historically preceded more pronounced market movements once demand returns – a tightening float bringing concentrated purchasing power into an environment where participants who remained active during the listless phase are positioned to benefit disproportionately when sentiment changes.

Ethereum tests new lows as market searches for a bottom

Ethereum remains firmly in bearish control on the daily timeframe, with the price near $1,630 after suffering a strong breakout from the months-long consolidation that dominated trading between February and May. The most significant technical development on the chart is the decisive loss of the $1,800-$1,900 support zone, an area that acted as demand repeatedly throughout the first half of the year. Once this bottom fell, selling pressure quickly accelerated and pushed ETH to a new 2026 low near $1,500.

From a market structure perspective, the sequence of highs and lows remains clearly bearish. The April-May rally peaked near $2,400, creating a lower high compared to previous rallies, before sellers regained control. Since then, Ethereum has produced a series of higher highs and lower lows, culminating in the recent collapse thanks to support. Importantly, current price is well below the 50, 100 and 200 day moving averages, confirming weakness across all major time frames.

Volume behavior adds another layer to the analysis. The recent selloff generated one of the largest volume surges seen in months, signaling aggressive participation as ETH broke support. Although a short-term rebound has emerged from the $1,500 zone, buyers have so far failed to regain significant resistance.

The immediate battleground is the area between $1,500 and $1,550, which now represents the most important support of the year. An extended hold could allow Ethereum to build a base following a nearly 35% decline from its May highs. However, unless the price manages to reclaim the former support zone around $1,800, the rallies will likely be seen as corrective moves in a broader downtrend rather than the start of a sustainable recovery.
