It was fair to say that CCP Games wasn’t going to keep calling Project Awakening that forever, right? Well, that wasn’t the case, and as of today, the company is now calling it EVE Frontier.
Now, before you get too excited, there are two things you need to know: Yes, a lot of things. EVE Online The spin-offs already have homes in the DAY BEFORE cemetery, so the DAY BEFORE Putting your name out there isn’t necessarily a winning strategy. And that’s CCP’s blockchain adventure because CCP has never seen a gaming tech fad that it hasn’t tried to invest a ton of money in.
We spotted some mainstream sites shocked by the news this morning, but in fact, CCP Games has been talking about Project Awakening since at least March of last year, around the time that CCP owner Pearl Abyss announced to investors that it had a blockchain project in the works. This news came shortly after EVE Online Gamers have revolted against the CCP’s attempts to introduce NFTs into DAY BEFOREthat CCP was forced to abandon – just some relevant context for how these things tend to go down with real MMORPG players.
Indeed, today’s press release touts CCP’s transparency but only mentions blockchain once, the video doesn’t mention it at all, and the website uses phrases like “smart storage units” and “smart assemblies” as euphemisms to describe how creators will interact with the blockchain. But there’s no big secret here: this is just another sandbox for exploration and exploitation.
“With all players on a single server, death and opportunity lurk in equal measure. Awareness is power: your skill as a pilot and strategic choices determine the outcome of every encounter, whether you prefer hit-and-run tactics, stealth, or all-out war. Exploit the Frontier’s natural resources to upgrade your ship with vital technology and gain new abilities. Acquire fuel, the lifeblood of your voyage, to power your journey as you overcome its dangers. A vibrant, community-driven economy lets you create custom currencies, establish markets, and trade assets, services, and reputation in a truly open environment. Rebuild civilization from the ashes using Smart Assemblies, an open-source platform, to build and program infrastructure in space. Expand your influence with defenses, trading posts, and multiple types of features, each with a programmable layer that connects the Frontier world to the real world outside. Develop your own ideas or meet the needs of others: From mission systems to private economies, Smart Assemblies liberates third-party development with a toolkit that allows creators to build beyond a virtual world.
The game has been in testing since last December; signups for playtests are available on the official website. “Founder Access” should be coming soon for PC and Mac players.
