Oh dear. Here we go again. As the calendar turns to a new year, reports of an outbreak of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China are raising questions about the virus and its possible fallout.

It is not yet officially known whether HMPV is the cause of the growing wave of flu-like illnesses in China, but data from the China CDC paints a worrying picture as the new year approaches. The China CDC reports that influenza still causes other respiratory illnesses, claiming 30.2% of test results by the end of 2024. But HMPV, which generates 6.2% of positive tests and 5.4% of hospitalizations, s t’s approaching more notorious territory, beyond COVID-19.

Is there a Polymarket odds maker for a new pandemic? If so, the chances should be low. Calling China’s HMPV a major risk would be tied to CNN levels of gaslighting, but ignoring it isn’t wise either. Keep an eye on the story.
