On Tuesday, Google announced the agents’ payment protocol (AP2), which he described as an “open protocol developed with the main payment and technology companies”.

The protocol is designed to allow AI agents to send and receive payments to each other, taking charge of different types of payment such as credit and debit cards, stablescoins and real -time banking transfers.

“We collaborate with a diversified group of more than 60 organizations to help shape the future of agency payments,” said Google leaders.

Some of these partners are big names in Crypto, such as Coinbase and the Ethereum Foundation, while others are global payment platforms such as American Express, Mastercard, Paypal, Revolut and Unionpay.

Autonomous AI payments

Coinbase has developed its own AI and cryptography payment solutions, including in particular the care of the point of a dollar. The Google protocol is based on the agent2age frame of the company from April 2025, anticipating a future where IA agents communicate and transmit directly without human intervention.

“The way we have built it is the ground to take into account heritage capacities and existing payment capacities as well as the abilities to come such as stablecoins,” web3 in Google Cloud, James Tromans told Fortune.

AP2 is designed as a universal protocol, “ensure safety and confidence for a variety of payments such as stablecoins and cryptocurrencies,” said the firm. It aims to accelerate the management of the web3 ecosystem thanks to a solution ready for production for cryptography payments based on agents.

“Extensions like these will help shape the evolution of cryptocurrency integrations in the Core AP2 protocol.”

The system strengthens confidence by using “mandates”, which are intelligent infiltrated and cryptographically signed contracts which serve as verifiable proof of the instructions of a user.

These mandates address the two main ways that one user will buy with an agent: real -time purchases with the human present and delegated tasks that the agent will manage.

The future of shopping

AP2 also allows a sophisticated autonomous trade such as “smart purchases”, where AI agents monitor availability and run purchases when the conditions are met.

He can also look for personalized offers with agents who contact merchants with specific details and deadlines for the article sought.

AI agents can also carry out coordinated tasks such as the reservation of flights and hotels with multi-supplier transactions simultaneously.

This week, the Ethereum Foundation has also announced the training of a new team to work on agental AI payments for the Ethereum network.
