A pseudonymous investigator on the channel says he’s unraveling a malicious scheme that uses hacked accounts on social media platform X to promote a fake memecoin.

ZachXBT claims the cybercriminal stole the credentials of high-profile X accounts by sending phishing emails impersonating Team X.

The emails appear as a notice of violation of X’s policies and guidelines to create a sense of urgency and trick recipients into clicking on a malicious link.

“A malicious actor stole approximately $500,000 in the last month by compromising over 15X accounts (Kick, Cursor, Alex Blania, The Arena, Brett, etc.).

Each of the 15 ATOs was directly connected by mapping the deployer address for each scam.

The attacker went back and forth between Solana and Ethereum in an attempt to confuse the funding source.

According to smart contract platform Neutron, the threat actor sent fake copyright infringement emails asking targeted X users to reset their password and two-factor authentication (2FA) by visiting what turned out to be a phishing site.

Said ZachXBT about security measures,

“Be sure to limit email address reuse between services and use security keys for 2FA on important accounts as much as possible.”
