Jane Street Cuts Bitcoin ETF Holdings by 71%: Is the TradFi Rally Cooling Down?

In the latest Bitcoin ETF news, Jane Street reduced its position in BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust by 71% in Q1 2026, from 20.3 million shares worth over $1 billion to 5.9 million shares worth $225 million, a reduction that landed in a 13F quarterly filing released Tuesday and immediately put crypto Twitter on alert.

At first glance, this looks like one of the world’s most sophisticated trading companies is making a serious move away from Bitcoin.

Here’s the central tension this article uncovers: The same filing that shows Jane Street reducing its position in the Bitcoin ETF also shows the company nearly doubling its exposure to Ether during the same quarter. This is not the behavior of a company that has become bearish on crypto. This is the behavior of a company’s rotating inventory, and understanding why this distinction is important is the whole game here.

Bitcoin ETF News: What a 13F Filing Really Tells You (And What It Doesn’t)

Think of a market maker as a car dealer, not a private collector. A dealership has dozens of cars on its lot, not because it likes all the models, but because customers may come in and want one. If the dealership reduces its pickup inventory by 71% and doubles its SUV inventory, that tells you something about what customers bought, not what the dealership thinks will best retain its value over the next decade.

Jane Street works the same way in the ETF markets. As a market maker and authorized participant, he creates and redeems ETF shares to maintain prices efficiently. The shares it holds on its books at the end of a given quarter are largely inventory, positions it has accumulated to meet demand, hedge other exposures or facilitate trades. This is not a long-term directional bet on Bitcoin, like a pension fund allocation would be.

This is where the 13F filing format creates real confusion. A 13F only captures long positions in U.S.-listed securities at one time, the last day of the quarter. It doesn’t show anything about short positions, derivatives, options or offshore holdings. For a firm like Jane Street, which runs very complex hedged portfolios, analysts explicitly caution against treating these numbers as a directional view of the portfolio. The net exposure to Bitcoin after accounting for all hedging could be completely different from what the record shows.

There is also a lag issue. The first quarter 2026 filing reflects positions as of March 31. By the time it was published on Tuesday, those positions may already have looked nothing like what Jane Street holds today.

Understanding how ETF flow data can be misleading is a critical context here; A snapshot of a company’s inventory on a given day is just a snapshot of a much bigger picture. At the same time, broader market data from May 2026 shows that weekly inflows into spot Bitcoin ETFs still exceed $1 billion, led by BlackRock and Fidelity, suggesting that overall institutional demand remains intact.

The Aether Angle: Rotation, Not Retreat

The Ether side of this issue deserves at least as much attention as the Bitcoin cut. Jane Street added approximately $82 million to BlackRock’s iShares Ethereum Trust fund and Fidelity’s Ether fund in the first quarter of 2026, nearly doubling its total exposure to Ether ETFs in a single quarter.

This doesn’t sound like a company losing faith in crypto; this looks like a firm repositioning within the asset class.

JANE STREET JUST EXPOSED THEIR NEXT TARGET: ETHEREUM.

The same company behind the daily 10 a.m. dump of Bitcoin, the same company sued for insider trading in the $40 billion LUNA collapse, and the same company with $567 million frozen by Indian regulators could now target Ethereum.

The most likely explanation is that Jane Street is responding to customer demand. Spot Ether ETF products launched in mid-2024 and have gained traction with institutions; A market maker’s job is to keep stocks where buyers show up. If more institutional orders hit the Ether ETF side of the book in the first quarter as demand for Bitcoin ETFs slowed, the filing would look exactly like this.

Bitwise advisor Jeff Park directly offered a more bullish reading: reducing Bitcoin ETF holdings “eliminates excess” and means “price discovery is back on the menu,” with Park suggesting BTC could reach new all-time highs now that a major liquidity provider has de-risked its reported spot exposure.

It’s a contrarian view that deserves to be retained. A large excess inventory of market makers can actually suppress price action, so its suppression is not directly bearish. It is also consistent with other institutional actorslike Morgan Stanley, simultaneously increasing their exposure to Bitcoin ETFs, painting a mixed picture, although far from uniformly negative..
