Nifty Gateway shuts down – Users must unload NFTs by February 23

The recent downturn in the non-fungible token market, which led to massive value erosion, project failures, and a significant decline in market capitalization at the end of 2025, continues to take major casualties. Nifty Gateway, a leading non-fungible token marketplace, has shut down its trading platform, citing massive losses. In this article, we will explore this dispatch in detail.

Nifty Gateway leaves the NFT marketplace

In a blog post on January 24, the Nifty Gateway team confirmed its intention to close its operations by February 23, 2026. As of today, Nifty Gateway is in withdrawal-only mode. It is unclear whether NFT traders will permanently lose access to assets held after February 23. At the time of publication, customers with a current USD or ETH balance, or who hold an NFT, are notified via email with instructions to move their assets off the Nifty platform.

Today we are announcing that the Nifty Gateway platform will be shutting down on February 23, 2026. As of today, Nifty Gateway is in withdrawal only mode.

Launched in 2020, Nifty Gateway is a digital art marketplace and production studio specializing in non-fungible tokens, often referred to on the platform as “Nifties”. The NFT marketplace platform was initially founded in 2018 by twins Duncan and Griffin Cock Foster and acquired in late 2019 by Gemini LLC, the cryptocurrency exchange owned by identical twins Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss.

In its day, Nifty Gateway allowed NFT users to purchase digital art using credit and debit cards and cryptocurrencies. Unlike open markets, Nifty Gateway was a centralized and organized platform. It hosted “drops” of exclusive limited edition collections from artists like Beeple, Pak and Refik Anadol. It reportedly paid more than $372 million in royalties to artists from secondary market sales.

Nifty Gateway will be remembered as a pioneering and curated NFT marketplace. It played a pivotal role in bringing digital collectibles into the mainstream, especially during the historic NFT boom of 2021. It was a user-friendly, far-reaching NFT marketplace platform and was often discussed as a bridge between traditional finance and blockchain technology. The closure of Nifty Gateway marks the end of the first high-profile era of NFT markets.

Reactions from the NFT community

News of the sudden shutdown blindsided many artists and collectors, reigniting long-standing concerns about NFT platforms’ curation, centralization, and long-term preservation of digital art. The lack of clarity has left many users scrambling to understand what happens next, particularly regarding asset withdrawals, smart contract guarantees, and the long-term accessibility of artwork created through the platform.

In a January 27 interview with Decrypt, iconic artist and collector Bryan Brinkman expressed his displeasure with the sudden closure of Nifty Gateway. “Now we are left with more questions than answers: why the sudden stop, why the lack of communication and what will happen to these works of art? » Bryan Brickman complained. Brinkman’s relationship with Nifty Gateway began in October 2020, when he participated in the platform’s first edition of artist-curated assets by Ekaitza.

“I saw the potential for a simple collection platform including credit card payments, custodial wallets and high-quality digital art,” Brinkman said. Digital artist and collector Bryan Brinkman has been active in the field of NFTs and digital art since his beginnings. The problems with the Nifty Gateway NFT marketplace began after the launch of OpenSea. “Over the years, we saw the NFT site struggle to keep up with demand and decline when flippers discovered PFP and OpenSea in the summer of 2021,” Brinkman revealed.

Factors that fueled the Nifty Gateway slowdown

Before summarizing, Bryan Brikman noted that the rise of profile picture projects (PFPs) like CryptoPunks, Bored Ape Yacht Club, and Pudgy Penguins, and permissionless marketplaces like OpenSea, are among the factors that contributed to the downfall of Nifty Gateway. Bryan noted that since their launch, users have shifted their attention away from curated art NFT platforms. Liquidity, speculation, and rapid iteration became dominant forces in the NFT economy, while Nifty Gateway’s centralized structure began to feel increasingly limiting for some artists, Bryan noted.

In the meantime, Brinkman estimates that around 500 works from his own releases remain in the custodial portfolios of Nifty Gateway collectors and have not yet been retired. He has already withdrawn all 175 works from his personal Nifty Gateway collection. It is unclear whether all NFT collectors will still be able to withdraw artwork from the platform after February 23, 2026.

Nifty Gateway joins the rapidly growing list of NFT marketplaces that have exited the NFT marketplace. This includes Kraken NFT Marketplace, which closed in February 2025, Game Step NFT, which closed in February 2025, RTFKT NFT Studio, which closed in January 2025, Bybit NFT, which closed in April 2025, and X2Y, which closed in April 2025. In October 2025, OpenSea transitioned from a purely NFT approach to become a multi-chain crypto trading aggregator after its original business model collapsed.
