Payward Europe, which has obtained an electronic money institution license in Lithuania, provides Kraken’s parent company structure with another regulated route for euro-denominated fiat and crypto services in Europe.

For more details, visit the official platform of the Bank of Lithuania.

TL;DR

  • Payward Europe has obtained an EMI license in Lithuania, according to the list of the Bank of Lithuania.
  • The license strengthens regulated access to the fiat rail for European operations linked to Kraken.
  • European crypto companies are working to align payment, custody and exchange services with clearer licensing frameworks.

Crypto exchanges don’t just compete on tokens and fees. They also compete on banking access, payment lanes, local licenses and the ability to cleanly move fiat currencies in and out of the platform. This is where EMI licensing becomes important.

Why licensing is important

An electronic money institution license can support payment services and electronic money activities within a regulated European framework. For a crypto exchange group, this can help reduce reliance on third-party providers and make fiat integration more resilient.

Lithuania is one of the most active fintech licensing hubs in Europe, and the timeline fits with MiCA’s broader transition. Companies wishing to serve European users now need a more mature regulatory footprint than in previous cycles.

The European game of Kraken

The Payward name is important because Kraken’s operational structure uses Payward entities in different jurisdictions. The license does not mean that every Kraken service changes instantly, but it does indicate continued investment in regulated infrastructure.

For users, the most visible effect may come later through smoother payments, account services or product availability. For the market, the signal is already clear: the big exchanges are building deeper European rails rather than waiting for regulation to settle around them.

This report is based on information from the Bank of Lithuania.
