Ripple Pushes $1.3 Billion via XRP Rail: Hype or Real Usefulness?

Ripple’s payment network just reported processing approximately $1.3 trillion in transactions in the second quarter of 2025 through its XRP-powered on-demand liquidity (ODL) product. But XRP barely made headlines, as traders weighed adoption headlines against a still-choppy altcoin market.

For us asking if crypto does anything beyond speculation, this story offers a rare concrete data point that you can actually use. Follow us below.

Market capitalization

What Ripple XRP Really Dealt With: Why Should We Care?

Ripple runs a global payments network that aims to replace the slow and expensive wiring system that banks use today. Instead of waiting days for money to cross borders, ODL uses XRP as a “bridge asset” to move value in seconds between different currencies.

Imagine XRP being a high-speed shuttle that transports value from one bank account to another without those accounts needing to hold each other’s currency.

THE ADVANTAGE OF RIPPLE’S FAST PAYMENT

Brad Garlinghouse explains that Ripple can modernize banking by unlocking value through $XRP Ledger, using XRP as an efficient bridge asset built for speed.

According to AInvest, Ripple’s ODL processed approximately $1.3 trillion in payment volume in the second quarter of 2025, with partner institutions claiming savings of approximately 90% compared to the legacy SWIFT system. This is important because banks only change rail when it clearly saves them time and money. The more real bills ODL pays, the less XRP looks like a pure casino token and the more it acts like financial plumbing.

If you truly understand global liquidity, you know exactly why $XRP becomes unstoppable 🚨👇

Ripple’s ODL works in over 40 markets, eliminating pre-funding, unlocking 24/7 FX, and reducing costs by up to 90% for real businesses.

Big names are already connecting to the Ripple network, including Santander, SBI, PNC and Standard Chartered, as reported by AInvest. And these are the kind of banks that typically move slowly and are risk averse, making their use a strong signal for newbies trying to separate real adoption from marketing buzz.

To understand how this fits into price action and sentiment, our coverage of XRP price volatility provides useful context on how news and payment data interact with the XRP chart.

How Could Ripple Banking Change the Long-Term Story of XRP?

Ripple is no longer just about selling software. According to Reuters, it has applied for a U.S. national bank charter, which would allow it to connect more deeply with traditional finance and offer more regulated services alongside its stablecoin RLUSD. A banking charter would move Ripple from a “fintech partner” to a “financial institution in its own right,” which would bring stricter oversight but also more trust from large corporate clients.

Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse told CoinDesk that he expects XRP to capture up to 14% of SWIFT’s global payments volume over the next five years. SWIFT currently handles most of the world’s cross-border bank transfers, so even a slice of that pie would lock XRP into everyday finances in a way that most altcoins never achieve. This does not guarantee a price rise, but it strengthens the argument that XRP has a real role in the financial system.

Is XRP Ledger ready for ISO 20022, just like SWIFT updates? Yes, that’s why banks are finally paying attention. Finally a blockchain that speaks their language (literally). Is this the start of real change, or just another update? Stay tuned. pic.twitter.com/ws5VS2A2gw

We are also seeing more institutional tools emerging around XRP, from CME-listed futures to ETF inflows. Our article on XRP ETF shows how fund managers are now treating XRP more like a serious macro asset than a niche token. The pattern is clear: railways, banks and regulated products overlap.

Ripple’s broader roadmap includes futures, ETFs, and a dollar stablecoin, which we covered in more detail in our Ripple Stablecoin article. For starters, this means that XRP is no longer just a single token bet, as it sits at the center of a growing payments stack.

Is XRP adoption already a consideration or is it still a high risk?

Here’s the uncomfortable question: If XRP moves trillions, why doesn’t the price increase every quarter? Our previous analysis on XRP price prediction explains a key point for us: utility and price do not always move in sync. Large partners can route payments through XRP but hold few of them, and Ripple is still selling tokens from its escrow, adding continuous supply.

Regulation also weighs on history. A bank charter involves strict compliance controls, capital rules and constant oversight from U.S. regulators. This can slow down rollouts and limit how aggressively Ripple pushes new products. If regulators change their stance on how banks treat cryptocurrency exposure, XRP volumes and liquidity could falter.

For your portfolio, treat XRP like a high-beta fintech stock rather than a savings account. You bet that banks will continue to push volumes away from SWIFT and that XRP will remain the preferred bridge asset. Size your positions modestly, avoid using borrowed money, and don’t put rent or emergency savings into a token that still trades in a highly volatile market.

Ripple’s payment rail is now moving significant money, and the banking world is no longer mocking XRP as a toy. Future chapters will show whether this traction translates into sustainable demand for the tokens or whether it remains mostly under the hood while traders pursue the next narrative.
