The special contribution period for the KZG ceremony ran from April 1st to April 16th, 2023. This allowed participants to contribute in ways that might not have been possible during the open contribution period. While the ceremony only requires one honest participant to provide a secure result, special contributions provide additional guarantees beyond a standard entropy contribution:
- calculating entropy in an isolated environment (e.g. on an isolated machine, by physically wiping and destroying the hardware) means that it is unlikely that a malicious entity has extracted the entropy at any given time.
- It is unlikely that the detailed documentation (see links below) attached to real reputations has been fully recovered or tampered with by a malicious coordinating entity. The records are available for future observers to explore.
- different hardware and software limitations, correlated risk
- differentiated entropy generation (e.g. measuring an explosion) prevents the ceremony output from being compromised by a failure in regular entropy generation (e.g. hosted interface)
- Contributions involving large groups of people are harder to falsify than those involving a single person. This allowed participants to contribute in ways that might not have been possible during the open contribution period. For example, by requiring more time than the usual window or a unique method of generating entropy that included a larger group.

02 – The KZG ball machine
The KZG Marble Machine is an artwork/device with different track sections showing different phases of Ethereum’s history. The machine uses 23 sensors to measure small fluctuations in each marble’s path as well as various environmental factors to ensure that the randomness is unbiased. 04 – Canine Dinner Dance Dynamics
@saint-rat gave his dog, Charlie, some biscuits that they had scattered on the floor. They then used a python script and computer vision to track Charlie and the cookies’ location as he ate them. Justin Florentine built a dice tower that could both collect entropy for the ceremony and help determine the outcomes of his tabletop games. The dice tower was a sealed box that the dice were rolled into before collecting them in a sealed chamber where they were photographed by a Raspberry Pi (and a camera). Computer vision was then used to read the dice which were used to determine the success/failure/damage of a given roll while adding the dice values to an internal entropy accumulator. A trapdoor then opened to return the dice to the player. By the end of the game, 1024 bits of entropy had been collected and the SD card used in the Pi was burned to destruction.

13 – Catropy
Cat Proof or Catropy is a project to collect entropy from cats playing with a ball. This was achieved by integrating a custom PCB with a ESP-32 Microcontroller and one MPU-6500 6-axis Inertial Measurement Unit into a knitted ball and hand it to the cat (or human). The ESP-32 would then collect data from the accelerometers and gyroscopes, hash it into an entropy accumulator, and serve that entropy via WiFi to the server performing the PoT calculations. cat proof for more details on the multiple contributions, hardware, software, a video of the contribution and how this project went further to support cat shelters.
