In the midst of global efforts to adopt the crypto, the members of the Riksdag, the Swedish parliament, urge the country’s finance minister, Elisabeth Svanton, to assess a Bitcoin reserve (BTC) for the assets of Sweden.
The Swedish legislator offers a bitcoin reserve
On Monday, the member of the Swedish Parliament and the Finance Committee Dennis Dioukarev sent a letter to the Minister of Finance asking him to consider adding cryptography to the country’s national reserve.
Dioukarev displayed the letter translated on X, highlighting the global trend of countries that buy or refrain from selling their seized digital assets, including BTC. He also noted that the United States created a Bitcoin reserve, which raises the question of whether the country should develop a similar strategy to create a SBR alongside the Gold Reserve and the Sweden currency.

President Donald Trump signed a decree on March 6 to create a strategic bitcoin reserve and “storage of digital assets” within the US Treasury Department. The order requires that initiatives would be funded by the cryptography seized of the procedures for criminal and civil confiscation of the government, including the 200,000 American BTC assets and other digital assets already held by the Treasury Department.
The legislator suggested following the American steps and not using taxpayer money to buy Bitcoin. Instead, he proposed that the Swedish authorities could be invited to transfer the BTC seized to the Swedish Central Bank.
He closed the letter by asking the Minister of Finance if “Is it something that the Minister and the Government are considering?”
In a post X, a member of the cryptographic community wondered if she had “an honest and somewhat complete understanding of the technology in question”, which suggests that it would be “a difficult battle” otherwise.
Global BTC reserve trend
Another member of the Riksdag, Rickard Nordin, recently sent a similar letter asking the Minister of Finance to include the BTC in the reserves of Sweden to diversify his assets in foreign currency.
As the Bitcoinist reported, the legislator wondered if the Minister and the Government “considered the possibility of allowing the Riksbank to include Bitcoin in the Monetary Reserve of Sweden, and the Minister and the Government act to give the Riksbank such an opportunity?”
In the letter of April 7, Nordin also noted that several international players consider Bitcoin as a reserve of value and coverage against inflation. In addition, Nordin stressed that the BTC is used as a means of payment and “an important means for combatants of the freedom to manage payments in the event of repression of authoritarian regimes”.
For example, the Federal MP for Brazil, Eros Biondini, presented a bill in November to create a national BTC reserve to diversify the financial assets of the National Treasury of Brazil and “guarantee the economic sovereignty of the country”.
Italy and the Czech Republic have recently experienced support for BTC reserves, while several American states have been in a race to establish SBRS, many of which have always progressed their bills through the legislative process.
This trend opened the discussion to include the BTC in the government’s exchange reserves despite the tradition of Sweden of “conservative and carefully managed exchange reserves, mainly composed of foreign currencies and gold”.
In the end, the letter from Nordin indicates that Svoltesson has until Wednesday April 16, to answer, while Dioukarev offered to the Minister of Finance until Wednesday, April 23, to answer his question.
