Tether sets 14-day deadline for high-stakes $500 billion deal

Tether gave potential investors a strict deadline: commit within 14 days or lose their place completely.

The world’s largest stablecoin issuer is pursuing a funding round that would value the company at $500 billion, a figure that would put it above some of the biggest names in U.S. banking.

A valuation that eclipses its own product

This figure is striking when compared to Tether’s actual market capitalization, which currently stands at around $184 billion. The gap between these two numbers reflects what Tether is asking investors to believe: that the company’s future is worth far more than its present.

Reports indicate that the company has ambitions well beyond issuing USDT, and that a broader strategy is integrated into the valuation.

At $500 billion, Tether would be worth more than JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America and Wells Fargo. This kind of comparison attracts attention. It also raises questions that a two-week deadline leaves little time to answer.

The ultimatum is simple: enough investors sign up and the deal moves forward. Otherwise, Tether could suspend the fundraising attempt again.

This cycle almost never happened

This is not the first time that the company has carried out a major capital increase. An earlier attempt collapsed before it got off the ground. Early discussions reportedly suggested an increase of between $15 billion and $20 billion – numbers the company later walked back, calling them high-end possibilities rather than firm targets.

By February 2026, advisers would have reduced the target to around $5 billion. Concerns about transparency and the $500 billion price tag have dampened interest among some investors.

CEO Paolo Ardoino rejected the claim at the time, saying investor demand remained strong and there was no pressure to rush.

Now that the deadline is set, the pressure is on.

Transparency efforts come amid growing competition

A move made by Tether before this round may carry more weight than the deadline itself. The company recently hired a Big Four accounting firm to conduct its first full audit.

According to reports, the audit could be among the largest audits ever carried out in the financial sector – a significant step for a company that has long faced scrutiny over how its reserves are managed.

The timing is not accidental. Bringing in a major auditor just before a high-stakes fundraising sends a message to potential investors about the direction the company is taking when it comes to transparency.

Meanwhile, competition in the stablecoin space is intensifying. PayPal, Circle and a series of traditional financial companies have expanded their own stablecoin efforts.

USDC, managed by Circle, has a market cap of around $32 billion, well behind USDT’s $184 billion, but close. Tether’s dominance is real, but it is no longer uncontested.
