An American citizen of Springfield, Virginia, was sentenced to more than three decades in federal prison after being found guilty of having used cryptocurrency to financially support the Islamic State (ISIS), a group designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the American government.

According to a press release from the United States Ministry of Justice (DoJ), the individual, Mohammed Azharuddin Chhipa, 35, was sentenced to 364 months in prison to provide significant support to the Islamic State.

The conviction and determination of the sentence highlight the scope of support

Documents reveal that Chhipa was involved in an extended campaign between October 2019 and October 2022, during which he channeled funds to women’s members of the Islamic State in Syria. These funds have been used to help in various activities, including attempts to escape detention camps and the broader support of Islamic State agents.

Chhipa used social media to request donations, accepted funds electronically and has sometimes traveled important distances to collect physical money. He would later convert these funds into cryptocurrency, which he transmitted through intermediaries to Türkiye to be introduced as a smuggling in Syria for the members of the Islamic State.

The DoJ said that Chhipa’s efforts involved sending more than $ 185,000 to cryptocurrency to support the terrorist group. This financial support, according to prosecutors, allowed Islamic State agents to continue their activities.

“This accused directly financed the Islamic State in his efforts to commit vile terrorist atrocities against innocent citizens in America and abroad,” said Prosecutor General Pamela Bondi in the press release.

The director of the FBI, Kash Patel, added that this case underlines the commitment of the office to hold responsible for all the persons involved in the support of terrorism, whether this support is financial or operational.

The FBI Washington Land Office conducted the investigation, and the federal prosecutors obtained convictions on a conspiracy chief to provide significant support or resources to an designated foreign terrorist organization, as well as four counts of supply and attempted support. A jury rendered the guilt verdict in December 2024, leading to the conviction on Thursday.

The role of crypto in the financing of terrorism leads to a meticulous examination

The American lawyer’s office highlighted the severity of Chhipa’s actions, declaring that facilitating financial support for a violent extremist group while residing in a country that values individual freedom represents a serious violation of national security.

“Those who finance and facilitate terrorism support the same responsibility as those who make attacks,” said American lawyer Erik S. Siebert.

The press release also identified the main co-conspirator of Chhipa as a member of the Islamic State based in Syria. This person played a role in collecting funds for Islamic State operations, including planned terrorist attacks and private rashes.

The use of cryptocurrency in this program reflects a trend in the financing of terrorism, where digital assets are now used for their pseudonym nature and their cross-border transfer ease.
