One or more Nigeria-based crooks would have put the identity of the Trump-Vance inaugural committee, steering $ 250,300 in USDT based in Ethereum to a planned donor.

American lawyer Jeanine Ferris Pirro announced on Wednesday that the office had filed a complaint, classifying the scam as a compromise program by commercial e-mail.

According to the prosecutors, the FBI traced 40,53 USDT from the transaction via the blockchain analysis. The complaint requests the restoration of these funds to return to the victim.

Victim of the scammer of the scam using a fault with a low address

The crook sent an email to the victim last December, pretending to be Steve Witkoff, co-president of the Trump-Vance inaugural committee.

The current address used by the crook had a tiny “l” instead of a tiny “i” in the mail @ t47lnaugural.com. The real email address of the campaign is @ t47inaugural.com. The American lawyer’s office for the Columbia district noted that the false address seemed almost identical to the original, given the police used by the attacker.

The Nigerian crook then asked the victim to deposit funds in a cryptographic portfolio ending in 58C52. On December 26, 2024, the victim sent the crypto to the portfolio, believing that it belonged to the inaugural committee. According to the FBI, $ 250,300 for USDT.eth were moved from the portfolio to another cryptographic address within two hours.

The United States is looking to recover $ 40,300 in cryptoscheme which has usurped the identity of the Trump-Vance inaugural committee

“Identity scams take many forms and cost the Americans billions of losses each year,” said Steven J. Jensen, deputy director of the FBI. “To avoid becoming a victim, carefully pass the email addresses, website URLs and spelling in all the messages you receive.”

Lawyer Pirro warned the donors of “double and triple check” if they send a crypto to their planned recipient.

“It can be extremely difficult for the police to recover lost funds due to the extremely complex nature of the blockchain.”
