The Maldives finalized an agreement of 8.8 billion dollars to build a financial center of blockchain first which would eclipse the entire economy of the country. The country aims to reposition itself as a global destination for digital assets.

According to the Financial Times, MBS Global Investments, based in Dubai, will finance the Maldives International Financial Center (MIFC) project.

The government signed the agreement on May 4, positioning the MIFC as a free tax area in Malé, the capital. The site will cover 830,000 square meters and is expected to generate up to 16,000 jobs by 2030. MBS Global said that around $ 4 billion at $ 5 billion in funding had already been gently engaged in individuals and high family offices.

The president of the Maldives, Mohamed Muizzu, has developed the initiative as a fundamental of the country’s long -term economic strategy, noting that it will serve as a “symbol of economic resilience”.

Maldives economic condition

The agreement comes in the midst of an increasing vulnerability of debt. According to the World Bank data, public debt and publicly guarantees Maldives reached 146% of GDP in 2020, with $ 3.7 billion in external debt declared in 2023. In 2024, India provided a bailout of $ 760 million to help the country avoid default.

Thanks to zero tax policies and simplified regulatory structures, MIFC seeks to attract exchanges, token issuers and web investment funds. This decision aligns the Maldives with a broader trend among small states in competition for cryptographic capital. The oasis of RAK digital assets to water and digital exchanges of the Bahamas (DARE) law 2024 demonstrate that the jurisdictions are increasingly building frameworks adapted to digital assets to capture this sector.

The CEO of MBS Global, Nadeem Hussain, underlined: “The financial center will establish a new world reference, advancing financial innovation of at least two decades. This is the next evolution of what happened in other financial centers around the world. ”

However, questions remain on regulatory preparation. The nation will have to adopt legislation allowing and establish surveillance mechanisms to meet international standards for the fight against money laundering. Compliance with GAFAC will probably become a focal point as the project progresses.

The approach of the Maldives illustrates how small economies dependent on tourism are faced with external debt pressures explore the new sectors of diversification.

The scale of the financial center in relation to the GDP of the country makes it a global aberrant value and a test case for the economic transformation focused on the crypto.

The agreement marks a lively pivot for the nation, which now seeks to compete in an area where regulatory clarity and tax advantages determine the capital flow.

The fact that this ambitious initiative succeeds or supports the existing governance capacities which take place at the start of the basic work of the project, which should be completed by 2030.
