The Ripple Factor: Why SBI Prioritizes XRP Over Ethereum for Japanese ETFs

SBI Holdings filed for Japan’s first Ripple XRP ETF, deliberately ignoring Ethereum and targeting $32 billion in institutional assets. This is a structural decision that reflects Japan’s regulatory environment and SBI’s decade-long investments in XRP infrastructure as much as pure market preference.

Japan moves towards the XRP ETF

The filing reveals two separate products: a Crypto-Assets ETF tracking Bitcoin and XRP together, and a Digital Gold Crypto ETF allocating over 50% to gold with additional crypto exposure for risk-sensitive investors. Neither product includes Ethereum.

The Japan Financial Services Agency has proposed a framework that would more explicitly reclassify cryptocurrencies as financial products. A change that makes regulated ETF packaging structurally viable for pension funds and insurance capital for the first time.

Why Ripple on Ethereum? The regulatory and infrastructural logic behind the SBI decision

The choice of SBI does not constitute an endorsement of XRP technology over that of Ethereum. It is the product of an institutional infrastructure and regulatory adequacy that has been developing in Japan for years.

SBI Ripple Asia, a joint venture between SBI Holdings and Ripple, has operated in Japan since 2016, providing SBI with deep access to XRP liquidity, established custody rails, and pre-existing compliance frameworks tied to Ripple’s payments network. Ethereum has no national institutional weight in the specific structure of the Japanese market.

Yoshitaka Kitao, CEO of SBI Holdings, has been one of Ripple’s most visible business advocates in Asia and makes the XRP ETF filing a logical extension of a strategic relationship. SBI does not launch a Japan Crypto product opportunistically; it converts existing infrastructure into a regulated investment.

The US market has moved successively from approving the Bitcoin ETF to approving the Ethereum ETF, driven in part by SEC precedent and the regulatory classification of Ethereum as a commodity. The Japanese FSA is navigating a different framework, where XRP’s deep local adoption and SBI’s Ripple partnership make it a simpler regulatory argument than Ethereum would be.

If approved, the XRP-linked ETF would be a first for Japan, providing local investors with regulated spot-style exposure without the risk of offshore trading.

Regulatory clarity developing in major markets has accelerated institutional timelines globally, and Japan is evolving on its own terms.

XRP Price Impact: Institutional Demand of $32 Billion

The SBI filing is a medium-term demand catalyst, not an immediate price trigger. ETF approval times in Japan are measured in months, and the FSA’s reclassification framework is still ongoing. But the directional signal for institutional investment in XRP is unambiguous.

The Japanese FSA could advance the cryptocurrency reclassification framework by this year, so that the $32 billion addressable market begins to convert.

The broader altcoin ETF dynamic is also growing globally. Both Grayscale and VanEck are advancing BNB ETF filings in the US, confirming that regulated altcoin exposure is now a product category and not an experiment. SBI positions Japan on this border.
