Trump Crypto: Family Made $2.3 Billion From Crypto While Investors Lost the Same

In Trump crypto news today, the president’s family made $2.3 billion from four cryptocurrency ventures as of late April 2026 while investing little to no own capital — and outside investors lost the equivalent of $2.3 billion in the same projects.

That’s the central finding of a Reuters investigation published June 9, 2026, based on thousands of pages of company filings and interviews with more than a dozen academics and consultants, as well as 27 retail investors.

This report fell as Bitcoin is currently trading at around $61,500, up +2.7% on the day, following a strong week that saw the leading digital asset rebound from its weekly low of $58,400.

How the Trumps risked almost nothing

Startup costs of World Liberty Financial (WLFI), a decentralized finance protocol that sells governance tokens giving holders the right to vote on the platform’s treasury and protocol decisions.

The TRUMP crypto memecoin project amounted to less than $1 million in combined value, and possibly much less. Seoyoung Kim, an associate professor of finance at Santa Clara University, said the expenses “could not have been zero if developers and advisors had been paid in tokens rather than cash.”

For the two Nasdaq-listed companies, ALT5 Sigma (now AI Financial Corp.) and American Bitcoin, a Bitcoin treasury and mining company, Reuters found that the Trump family’s stock ownership was acquired without monetary fees in both cases.

WLFI token sale: $1.4 billion, mostly to assets

Watch $WLFI
since I plotted it in April the chart screams accumulation, from what I have observed over the last few weeks it is hovering around a range of $0.05 to $0.064, 24 hour volume is $26.4 million (expect this to increase significantly as the market improves)

World Liberty Financial raised $1.4 billion by selling 30 billion governance tokens. Under the family’s deal with WLFI, the Trumps are entitled to 75% of the proceeds from the token sale, bringing in approximately $987 million of the disclosed sales, including a $538 million slice sold to ALT5 Sigma, which purchased $717 million worth of WLFI tokens in total and funneled more than $500 million to the Trump family.

Reuters found that the real figure is likely higher. A filing by World Liberty in October 2025 to comply with European regulations on cryptoassets revealed that the company held 3 billion fewer tokens than it had publicly declared the previous month.

Two academics and two crypto consultants told Reuters these tokens were likely sold without public disclosure. Using a weighted average of token prices over the relevant period, Reuters calculated that these sales generated at least $460 million more for the family, bringing WLFI’s total profit to more than $1.4 billion.

Campbell Harvey, a professor of finance at Duke University, reviewed the findings and said the token sale was significant and “it appears that insiders were dumping,” adding that selling “as early in the life of the project as World Liberty did is unusual.”

World Liberty Financial spokesperson David Wachsman responded that “WLFI does not validate third-party methodologies for valuing governance tokens or estimating aggregate investor positions.”

The TRUMP memecoin project has not disclosed its revenue, but blockchain data analyzed by Reuters indicates total revenue of around $1.2 billion, with the Trump family receiving around $616 million. Donald Trump Jr. praised the family’s crypto projects on January 19, 2025, the day before his father’s inauguration.

However, early investors in the TRUMP memecoin suffered significant losses, with prices peaking at $75.35 in January 2025 and crashing in April 2026, resulting in losses of over $700 million. WLFI token holders are facing losses of approximately $674 million as early buyers are unable to sell 80% of their holdings, which are now deemed worthless.

The situation raises concerns about possible crypto conflicts of interest, given Trump’s role in shaping U.S. digital asset policy while his family profits from these ventures.

Reuters notes that Trump’s crypto strategy involves minimal risk for the Trumps while shifting the financial burden onto investors, prompting regulators and watchdogs to question whether this poses a conflict for a sitting president.
