The United Kingdom will demand that cryptographic companies collect and report detailed information on customers on each exchange and transfer from January 1, 2026, as part of a radical effort to strengthen compliance and tax surveillance in the digital asset sector.

According to a declaration of May 14 of HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), the new rules will force that the platforms record complete names, personal addresses and tax identification numbers for all users.

Each transaction must also be recorded with details such as the cryptocurrency used and the amount transferred.

UK Crypto Reporting Rules to cover businesses, trusts and charitable organizations

The declaration of declaration extends beyond individual users to include companies, trustees and charitable organizations engaged in cryptographic activity.

Companies that do not respect or submit inaccurate data may be faced with penalties of up to £ 300 ($ 398) per user.

The authorities say they will provide additional advice in the coming months, but urging companies to start preparations now.

These changes mark the adoption by the United Kingdom of the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework, which aims to normalize the tax declaration obligations between jurisdictions.

“The United Kingdom is open to business – but closed to fraud, abuse and instability,” said the Chancellor of chessboard Rachel Reeves in April by revealing a bill to provide exchanges of crypto, guards and brokers under more strict surveillance.

The proposed legislation is designed to combat scams and fraud while improving consumer protection and strengthening confidence in the sector.

The change of policy comes in the midst of the growing adoption of cryptography in the United Kingdom. A study by the Financial Conduct Authority in November 2024 revealed that 12% of British adults had cryptographic assets, compared to only 4% in 2021.

The United Kingdom’s approach contrasts with the market on European Union markets (MICA).

While mica imposes stricter rules on stablecoin issuers – including volume limits – the United Kingdom has opted for a more flexible frame.

The foreign transmitters of the scoring will be authorized to operate without recording, and no ceiling will be imposed on the volumes of transactions, offering greater room for maneuver for innovation.

British commercial associations urge a special meeting in Crypto envoy

Earlier this year, a coalition of main British commercial associations called the government of Prime Minister Keir Starmer to appoint a special envoy for the crypto and develop a full action plan to support digital assets and the blockchain sector.

In a letter addressed to Varun Chandra, the Special Advisor to Starmer on businesses and investments, six British digital economy organizations highlighted the need for stronger strategic alignment to unlock investments, growth and job creation within the cryptographic industry.

In September 2024, the British government presented a new bill aimed at clarifying the status of digital assets, including non-fascinating tokens (NFT), cryptocurrencies and carbon credits, as “things” and “personal property” under the laws on the property of the country.

The United Kingdom was one of the countries that increased regulatory efforts following a few leading bankruptcies last year.

The FCA oversees cryptographic activities, focusing on anti-whiteness and consumer protection measures.
