During high use periods, the Ethereum “layer 1” blockchain can become slow and costly. THE … More The industry has created a number of layer 2 solutions to remedy it.

While blockchain technology promises transparency and decentralization, practical problems such as slow transaction speeds and high costs made it difficult to meet the needs of daily users.

Whether you exchange tokens, whether you are committed to NFT or get involved with decentralized applications, experience is often lower than transparent and effective interactions that people expect from modern digital platforms. On public blockchains such as Ethereum, periods of high demand always push transaction costs in dollars and delay the rules during the minutes – an experience that does not become consumer expectations.

To fill this gap, the developers turned to the layer 2 (L2) scaling solutions: the specially designed networks that execute the transactions of the main Ethereum chain, compress cryptographic evidence and display these evidence to layer 1 for an immutable purpose. The approach combines the safety of a base layer tested in combat with the speed and profitability required for mass market applications – an architecture which now protects around $ 36 billion over thousands of decentralized applications.

What is a layer 2 solution?

A layer 2 solution is any protocol that performs transactions on the basic blockchain (layer 1) while finally relying on this layer 1 for safety and the final regulations. Consider it as a parking lot in the shopping center: buyers still enter the main building (Ethereum), but real traffic is redirected to ramps on several floors built next to it, preventing the dead end at the front door.

Most L2s are distributed in two camps: rollers (optimistic or zero knowledge) and validium state / hybrid channels. Other recognized layer 2 solutions include blockchaines and nested failures.

Although all L2 is intended to improve scalability, their methods to inherit the safety of layer 1 and data management of data vary, and some, such as valids, introduce additional confidence assumptions concerning the availability of data. All share the same northern star: compress data, reduce costs and leave heavy security to the consensus tested in the combat of Ethereum.

How does layer 2 work?

An L2 launches hundreds, even thousands of user transactions, creates cryptographic proof of the new state and submits this light proof to layer 1.

Optimistic rollups (For example, optimism and arbitrum) assume that the lot is valid unless you are disputed in a dispute window. The fraud tests maintain honest operators.

ZK-Rollups (For example, the ZKSYNC era or the ZKEVM polygon) generate proven validity in advance, so that withdrawals finalize in a few minutes rather than in day.

In any case, the result is an increase of 10-100 × flow because only the proof, not all the details of the transaction, affects the L1.

How does layer 2 differ from layer 1?

Layer 2 solutions differ considerably from layer 1 in several key aspects. In terms of flow, layer 1 treats around 15 to 20 transactions per second (TPS), while layer 2 considerably increases this capacity, rollers reaching more than 1,000 TP and solutions such as polygon reaching potentially up to 65,000 TP.

Transaction costs also show a striking contrast; Layer 1 costs generally vary from $ 0.25 to $ 0.50 on average, but can increase $ 20 to $ 60 in high network congestion. On the other hand, layer 2 costs are often less than $ 0.05, certain solutions reducing costs as little as $ 0.0,0196, post-fans upgrade.

With regard to security, layer 1 is based on its mechanism for proof of proof of native (POS), while layer 2 inherits the safety directly from layer 1 to cryptographic evidence. Data availability also diverges in the approach, with layer 1 fully storing the data on the chain, while layer 2 incorporates chain evidence with minimum data requirements.

Finally, their use cases reflect their technical capacities. Direction 1 is generally reserved for requests for high -value decentralized financing (DEFI) and settlement processes, while layer 2 excels in high volume scenarios such as payments and games due to its improved scalability and lower costs.

Advantages of layer 2 for crypto users

The lower costs are the advantages of L2S, but several second order advantages are just as counted:

  1. Speed – The L2 confirmations arrive in a few seconds, corresponding to the web-App latency rather than in blocking. Arbitrum regularly regulates more than a million transactions per day without sweating.
  2. Scalability without forks – Ethereum developers can continue to innovate while Rollups are evolving independently.
  3. Best user experience – Chain games and NFT mints feel instantaneous, finally competing with centralized exchanges.
  4. Environmental efficiency – Compress thousands of transfers in a single drop in transaction gas consumption, reducing overall energy consumption.

Popular layer 2 solutions

  • Arbitrum One & Nova – Arbitrum One reached a record of 5 million daily transactions in December 2023; Nova focuses on ultra-heated social media style traffic. Arbitrum was the largest L2 solution, but on June 13, 2025, the base reached approximately $ 4.94 billion TVL, exceeding Arbitrum One, which now amounts to $ 4.03 billion TVL.
  • ZKSYNC era – First ZK -Rollup production with abstraction of the cooked account, lowering integrated friction.
  • Polygon ZKEVM-EVM-Equivalent ZK-Rollup; The first quarter of 2025 experienced a growth of 63% qoq in transactions as studios ports.
  • Superchain optimism – A coalition of operational battery channels (base, mode, zora) which aims to create a network of interconnected L2 channels which can communicate transparently.

How the layer 2 improves ethereum

The upgrading of Dencun in March 2024 of Ethereum presented blob (EIP-4844), a cheap database expressly for rollers. Blubs have lowered the transaction costs L2 Means of around 90%, catalyzing the migration of daily payments and micro-work out of the chain.

By moving the command routing, the AM Swaps and the NFT orders to L2 while anchoring security in L1, Ethereum keeps its ethics of intact decentralization but wins the flow at the Visa scale – a feat that the Pure L1 scale could not manage.

Use case for layer 2 technology

  • DEFU DEFUSE RETIVE SALE – high frequency trading on popular crypto trading platforms like Dydx or GMX now costs money.
  • Head games – The unchanging passport portfolio allows developers to enter assets at stake on ZKEVM without gas pop-ups.
  • Micropaments and funds – The cheaper and faster regulations can make layer payments 2 more profitable, especially for stablecoins.

Safety considerations of layer 2 networks

Although L2 networks offer a number of advantages on L1 in terms of cost and speed, there is nothing like a free lunch in cryptographic security:

  • Bridge risk – The displacement of assets between L1 and L2 is based on bridges of intelligent contract which have historically lost billions to exploits.
  • Centralization vectors – many Rollups still have multi-sigle upgrade keys or centralized sequencers; An honest majority hypothesis replaces tolerance for complete Byzantine defects.
  • Data availability – The conceptions of Validia and Validium publish cryptographic evidence but keep the raw data out of the chain, based on external suppliers to maintain the accessibility of the data.

Users must generally look for L2 with open-open nodes software, decentralized proponents and systems without permission to fraud planned on the roadmap.

Challenges faced with the adoption of layer 2

The L2 user experience remains a little useless: bridging ETH, RPC change and gas token envelope always confuse new arrivals. Portfolio standards such as EIP-4337 (account abstraction) and transactions sponsored by gas help, but generalized education is necessary. The regulators also make the transversal way as potential money points for money laundering, which can impose general fees of compliance with sequencers of sequencers in 2026 and beyond.

The future of layer 2 and web3

The industry is treating Ethereum more and more as a colonyA supreme finality court, while thousands of L2 “United States” manage daily trade. Optimism’s superchain will soon allow calls for atomic crossed rollers, and ZK-resistant hardware acceleration promises under-central costs. That a mega-rollup dominates or a specialized L2 network persists, the management is clear: evolve, not above.

End

The layer 2 scaling solutions have gone from the Whitepapers academic production to production rails supplying millions of daily transactions. By browsing the chain calculation and by displaying cryptographic chain receipts, they offer faster, cheaper and greener crypto experiences without abandoning Ethereum safety guarantees. Expect L2 – not yet another monolithic layer 1 – to transport the web3 to mass adoption.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Layer 1 manages the basic consensus and the availability of data; Direction 2 performs bulk transactions and periodically subjects the evidence to layer 1, reaching higher flow and decrease costs.

Yes. Most L2s are compatible EVM, so metamasque and material portfolios work once you add the RPC Réseau or connect via WalletConnect.

The “best” depends on the priorities: basic evils in TVL, Superchain optimism dominates the share of transactions, and ZK Rollups as Zksync offer an almost installation purpose with strong cryptographic guarantees.
