Ripple has released a multi-phase roadmap to make the XRP Ledger resilient to quantum computing attacks, with the goal of achieving full post-quantum readiness by 2028. What does post-quantum really mean for the XRP ledger?
Think of your XRP wallet as a padlock secured by a mathematical problem so difficult that no computer today could crack it in a reasonable amount of time. Quantum computers don’t just work faster; they approach certain math problems in a fundamentally different way, such as having a master key that can directly solve the puzzle. The honest answer is: not urgently, but not ever. IBM’s current quantum processors operate at around 1,100 qubits. Breaking the cryptography used in blockchain wallets would require millions. The broader crypto industry is grappling with the same problem at different rates. TRON announced a post-quantum upgrade called QuantumShield in early 2026, running hybrid signatures on its testnet, achieving comparable throughput while supporting approximately 30% larger transaction sizes. Algorand integrated post-quantum state proofs in 2022.
The Bitcoin debate, as the proposals around early Satoshi wallets show, is still largely in the discussion stage, given the complexity of coordinating protocol changes within a decentralized network without a central team.
What sets Ripple’s approach apart is the combination of an existing architectural advantage, native key rotation, with a named and sequenced roadmap and active cryptography research. Most networks are still evaluating the issue.
