XRPL ready specs move forward as developers refine XLS-66

XRP Ledger developers are refining XLS-66, a proposed standard for native lending on XRPL, and it could become one of the network’s most significant DeFi-style upgrades if the specification continues to advance.

The proposal describes on-chain, fixed-term, unsecured loans using single-asset vaults. It also leverages off-chain underwriting by loan brokers, with on-chain settlement managed through the XRPL infrastructure.

This mix is ​​important.

This is not a simple “anyone borrows from anyone” DeFi lending pool in the manner of fully collateralized Ethereum money markets. This is a more structured loan design that combines off-chain credit scoring with on-chain execution.

The feature is still under standards review and code testing. This is not live lending on the XRP Ledger mainnet.

XRPL goes beyond payments

The XRP Ledger has long been associated with payments, rapid settlement, and exchange functionality.

This story is important, but it may also make people underestimate the new direction of network development. XRPL developers have been working on features that bring the chain closer to broader on-chain finance, including vaults, automated market maker features, credentials, and now lending standards.

XLS-66 is part of this evolution.

A native lending protocol would give XRPL a more direct role in lending markets, but its design does not attempt to exactly copy existing DeFi models. Instead, it introduces single-asset vaults and fixed-term loans, while keeping off-chain underwriting in the loop.

This makes the proposal appear to be more of a bridge between traditional credit processes and blockchain settlement.

Why off-chain subscription is important

Most DeFi loans are overcollateralized.

A user deposits more value than they borrow, and smart contracts handle liquidations if collateral falls too far. This model is transparent and automated, but it is capital inefficient. Borrowers must already have substantial assets to access credit.

Unsecured loans are different.

This requires some form of trust, identity, credit assessment or underwriting. Otherwise, borrowers could simply take out loans and disappear. XLS-66 introduces loan brokers under this model, meaning that credit decisions and borrower assessment happen off-chain, while the resulting loan structure can be settled on-chain.

This is a very different risk model from standard DeFi lending.

This may be more useful for actual credit flows, but it also depends heavily on the quality of the underwriting process. Blockchain can record settlements, enforce certain conditions and provide transparency, but it cannot magically solve borrowers’ credit risk.

This is why the role of the loan broker is central.

Single-asset vaults could become a useful staple

Single asset safes are another key design element.

A vault structure can help organize funds, isolate assets, and provide a clearer container for specific lending activity. This could make XRPL loans easier to understand and manage than a looser pool design.

For developers, vaults can become a staple.

Once vault mechanisms are in place, other financial products may become easier to create. Loans, yield products, structured credit and asset management tools all require reliable ways to hold and account for assets.

This is why even discussions about technical standards can be important.

The market often waits until the mainnet launches before paying attention, but the architecture has already been shaped by then. XLS-66 is where loan design is debated and refined.

It’s not live mainnet lending yet

The biggest caveat is simple: this solution is still under review and testing.

Users should not assume that they can access native XRPL loans today. Developers are still working on specifications and code integration, including related work tracked in the XRPLF repositories.

This is normal for protocol development.

Financial primitives should be considered carefully because mistakes can be costly. Lending systems involve balances, repayments, defaults, vault accounting, authorizations, and user expectations. Throwing too fast would be worse than moving slowly.

For XRP holders, the proposal is still worth watching as it expands the network’s potential use cases.

If XRPL can support native lending securely, the network’s DeFi profile becomes stronger. This could attract developers and users who want credit products connected to XRPL’s speed and settlement features.

But the current stage is not that of adoption. It’s design.

XRPL’s DeFi ambition becomes more visible

XLS-66 shows that the development of XRP Ledger is moving towards a more advanced financial infrastructure.

This does not erase the network’s payment legacy. It adds another layer to it. Payments and lending are closely linked in real-world finance, and a blockchain capable of supporting both may have a broader role than one used just for transfers.

The question is execution.

Can the standard be finalized? Can the code be integrated securely? Will developers create useful lending products around this? Will users trust the off-chain subscription model? Will loan brokers create enough real demand?

These answers will take time.

For now, the important thing is that XRPL developers work on native lending in a way that reflects the network’s own design, rather than simply copying another chain’s DeFi model.

This makes the proposition more interesting.

If successful, XLS-66 could help transform XRPL into a broader financial applications layer. If it blocks, it will still show where the developers are trying to push the network.

Regardless, this is one of the most important XRPL standards efforts to watch.
