Altcoin Market Grows from $100 Billion to $26.5 Billion in Volume — Can Demand Recover?

Altcoin trading volume fell to $26.5 billion from highs above $100 billion, showing a sharp contraction in activity. As this decline continued, Binance processed approximately $7.7 billion. All this while other exchanges processed around $18.8 billion – confirming widespread weakness.

In relative terms, Binance currently has almost 40% share, and this share increases as overall stake decreases. Earlier peaks in February and October 2025 saw volumes climb to $40-$50 billion on Binance and up to $91 billion elsewhere, marking periods of high demand.

As volumes fall across markets, participation weakens across pairs and trade sizes, indicating a reduction in risk appetite.

However, this also means that capital is moving backwards rather than withdrawing completely. As engagement tightens, volatility often decreases, although such phases may precede repositioning once sentiment stabilizes and liquidity begins to return.

Altcoins enter capitulation zone as liquidity shifts to Bitcoin

Altcoin weakness deepened as nearly 38-40% of assets traded near all-time lows, pushing the market into a clear capitulation zone. As this level increases, it would reflect widespread deterioration rather than isolated declines.

At the same time, Bitcoin has held up relatively better, highlighting a growing divergence between major assets and risk assets. This change signals a liquidity rotation, where capital is moving into Bitcoin for security reasons while moving out of altcoins. As funds leave, altcoins face thinner liquidity and reduced demand, accelerating the price decline.

However, such extreme numbers also mean that selling pressure could be about to run out. Meanwhile, participants reduce their exposure to risk, favoring preservation over speculation.

Such a structure implies a fragile market, where downside risks remain. However, conditions could begin to favor accumulation if liquidity gradually returns to undervalued altcoins.

Market near capitulation as derivatives exceed spot demand

Finally, market structure revealed increasing stress without complete capitulation, with the short-term holder of Bitcoin (BTC) SOPR holding near 0.98, reflecting realized losses of around -12%. Since 2023, similar levels have often preceded deeper resets. And yet, the sale of press time seems to be more controlled than aggressive.

As a result, liquidations remained subdued at $234 million, with $127 million in long positions – indicating limited forced exits.

However, liquidity quality weakened as Binance’s Futures-to-Spot ratio reached its highest level in 1.5 years. Such a shift showed that derivatives activity grew faster than spot demand. This divergence also hinted at a fragile balance, in which markets could either stabilize or face further volatility if spot demand fails to strengthen.

Final summary

  • The Altcoin market showed weakening demand, with volumes falling to $26.5 billion and almost 40% trading near lows, reflecting a reduction in risk appetite.
  • Altcoins are now facing diminishing liquidity and selling pressure as capital shifts to Bitcoin (BTC), although conditions may begin to favor accumulation if demand returns.
