Coinbase and Apex tokenize Bitcoin Yield Fund on the core network

Coinbase Asset Management has partnered with financial services company Apex Group to launch a tokenized share class of its Bitcoin Yield Fund on the Base network. The initiative, announced Thursday, introduces a permissioned on-chain structure initially available to non-U.S. institutional and accredited investors.

By leveraging Base’s Ethereum Layer 2 solution, Coinbase, the fund aims to streamline settlement processes, reduce operational costs and maintain strict regulatory oversight. The move effectively migrates traditional fund administration tasks to blockchain, enabling near-instant processing of subscriptions and redemptions that would typically take several days in legacy systems.

Tokenized Compliance and Core Network Mechanisms

The new share class uses the ERC-3643 token standard, a protocol specifically designed for permissioned assets and regulated securities. Unlike standard ERC-20 tokens, which can be freely transferred between anonymous wallets, this standard imposes compliance checks directly in the smart contract code. Anthony Bassili, head of asset management at Coinbase, noted that the system integrates “token-level identity and eligibility,” ensuring that digital stocks can only be owned or traded by wallets associated with verified and whitelisted investors.

This structure allows the fund to operate on a public blockchain as a base while meeting strict Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) requirements. The Apex Group will administer the fund, ensuring that tokenized shares interact seamlessly with compatible platforms and custody solutions without compromising the fund’s regulatory position. The choice of the Base is strategic; the network quickly amassed over $5 billion in total value locked (TVL) by offering low fees and Ethereum compatibility, although it currently relies on a centralized sequencer – a trade-off often accepted by institutions prioritizing performance and support.

Institutional alignment with RWA trends

Coinbase’s move reflects a broader trend of asset managers testing the waters of on-chain finance, often referred to as real-world asset (RWA) tokenization. The initiative aligns with recent developments in which traditional institutions seek to tokenize everything from money market funds to physical infrastructure. For example, the sector has recently seen various applications, such as the ETHZilla project which tokenizes jet engines on Ethereum in order to democratize access to returns from aircraft rentals.

However, the scale of participation from major players like BlackRock and Franklin Templeton suggests that this is more than an experimental phase. Just as Solana RWA tokenization values reached new record highs this quarter due to high throughput capabilities, Coinbase is positioning Base as a competitor in terms of institutional volume. By rolling out a Bitcoin yield product rather than a simple cash token, Coinbase is attempting to bridge the gap between native crypto yield generation and traditional fund structures, catering to allocators who want exposure without the operational complexity of direct participation in DeFi.

Market implications and outlook

For the core ecosystem, the arrival of regulated investment vehicles signals diversification from the DeFi coin and retail trading that drove its initial growth. It makes the network a viable rail for regulated financial activity, potentially increasing total value locked (TVL) from less mercenary institutional sources than retail liquidity producers. This also puts Coinbase in direct competition with global custodians that create similar proprietary ledgers.

Investors and analysts will closely monitor the planned expansion of this product to US investors. Coinbase indicated that a tokenized share class for the United States was on the roadmap, pending regulatory clarity. Successful deployment in the US jurisdiction would seemingly validate the ERC-3643 authorized standard as a viable vehicle for SEC-compliant products on public blockchains.
