The ethereum.org translation program has been live more than two yearsand we’re excited to share some milestones we’ve reached since its inception, as well as some of our plans for the future.

Since we launched the initiative in 2019, over 2,000 community members have contributed, translating a total of 2.8 million words so far!

Thanks to all this activity, ethereum.org is now available in 37 different languages.

Even though English remains the main language viewed on the site (88% of total page views), traffic to translated pages is also increasing and has more than tripled since last year:

Some of the recent progress we have made:

  • In December 2020, we announced the creation of content versions 2.0+. Thanks to our translators, 19 languages have already been translated to version 2.0 or higher.
  • We have expanded our translator resources and updated all public references to the translation program. For more information on how to get involved, visit Translation program page on the website.
  • Our community of translators has also been involved in the translation of Ethereum Staking Launchpadan effort launched earlier this year and is currently available in 17 languages.
  • We recently organized translation groups to make it easier for our translators to connect with each other and the ethereum.org team. There are currently ten live translation groups on our Discord server, with new ones added upon request. Contact us on Discord if you want to join us!

Finally, the most recent development we would like to announce today…

New content releases

We have released new versions of content, containing pages on ethereum.org that have been recently added to the website or significantly updated.

In addition to uploading new content for our translators, we have also broken down existing content releases into more granular categories. This will allow translators to tackle high-impact content, like the home page, in more accessible tasks. This makes it easier for contributors to reach milestones and allows us to add translated content to the website more quickly.

The new content versions are distributed as follows:

  1. Homepage and site navigation

  2. Using Ethereum and Key Learning Pages

  3. Use cases and contribution pages

  4. Developer documentation (fundamental topics)

  5. Developer Documentation (Ethereum Tech Stack)

  6. White paper

  7. Developer documentation (advanced topics)

  8. General pages and additional learning pages

  9. Developer tutorials

Looking to the future

As the third quarter comes to an end, we are already looking ahead to the next quarter and beyond.

Below you can find some of our plans and proposed initiatives. We welcome community contributions, comments and ideas. If you would like to get involved or suggest areas we could focus on in the future, please send us a message at translations@ethereum.org.

Scope

We are expanding the scope of the translation program beyond ethereum.org content to include other important content in the Ethereum ecosystem.

Initially, we are investigating the possibility of translating relevant blog posts from the Ethereum Foundation Blog.

More information on this initiative will be published on ethereum.org and on the ethereum.org Discord.

Do you know of any valuable community resources that you think we should translate? Please let us know!

Translator recognition

All the progress we’ve made so far wouldn’t have been possible without our amazing translators, which is why we’re exploring better ways to recognize them.

The first of these initiatives is an extension of our POAP program, where translators can claim different POAPs based on the number of words they have translated this year.

More information about our POAP program

In the fourth quarter of this year, we plan to add translator rankings and a thank you page to the translation program page, which will allow us to feature all of our contributors on the website, as well as highlight some of our exceptional translators.

We will also explore the possibility of issuing credentials and other forms of approval for top contributors, so let us know what would interest you most!

Translation Program Resources

In the future, we will continue to expand our translator resources, to provide them with as much information as possible about participating in the program and using Crowdin.

This will make it easier to onboard new translators and provide our contributors with additional context on translation conventions, terminology, and project-specific instructions, making their work easier and leading to better, more consistent translations.

In addition to resources for translators, we will create documentation detailing the translation workflow and process, with the aim of supporting other translation initiatives in the Ethereum ecosystem. The goal here is to create a playbook with step-by-step guidelines on launching and managing a translation program, so that more Ethereum projects add support for internationalization.

Get involved

2021 was a productive year and the translation program saw significant growth. We are truly grateful for the level of support we have received and would like to thank all of our translators for helping us make ethereum.org accessible to everyone.

If you would like to get involved, you can find more information on how to get started on our Translation program pagejoin our Server Discord or join our project in Crowdin.
