Ethereum approaching its first official launch with Frontier, we spent the last week of February to our Holon in Switzerland to discuss what the future of the Ethereum Foundation will look like. Since the start of the project, one of our main dreams has not only been to deliver a world class product, but also to build a world class organization, with a quality of governance and transparency adapted to a foundation which would be responsible for helping to organize the maintenance of the Ethereum code for potentially to come. To this end, we have taken a certain number of measures, including an effort to hire a new administrative staff and a quarter of internal brand, and now we are officially announcing our research to join our board of directors.
First, an introduction roughly to the structure of the foundation now from an organizational point of view.

Stiftung Ethereum (it’s German for the “Ethereum Foundation”) is a non -profit organization recorded in Switzerland; More specifically, in the wonderful city of Zug:

Stiftung is the body which is ultimately responsible for managing the funds and determining the long -term vision and direction of Ethereum. The Foundation is legally controlled by an organization known as the Foundation council; However, a wider advisory group also exists which has been involved in the supply of contribution to decision -making. There are a number of legal entities recorded in several countries across Europe, and these entities each employ the people hosted in their respective countries. The centers of Switzerland and Berlin are the most important. The Foundation Council is intended to make decisions occasionally and to focus on the long term; For daily decisions concerning development, an “executive” made up of myself, Gavin Wood and Jeffrey Wilcke are in charge, with considerable help from Aeron Buchanan, Jutta Steiner, Kelley Becker, Frithjof Weinert and others on administrative and security management.
We are very grateful to the continuous service of the Advisory Council and the Current Council of the Foundation, and we had a successful first year under their direction. However, now that the scope and size of the organization have widened considerably, we seek to simultaneously present (i) new members to be part of the foundation council, and (ii) the transition of foundation’s activities and operations to more closely resemble a mature organization. The members of the board of directors would be required, at least, to come to Switzerland two to five times a year in order to attend the official meetings of the board of directors, where the management team will provide an update on the current state of the project and we will discuss the instructions and, if necessary, the resolutions of success relating to the Foundation. Anyone on the board of directors is free to make new contributions beyond that. The new council should be finalized and inaugurated at the end of June.
The ideal characteristics that we are looking for in potential candidates of the board of directors include:
- Experience by participating in non -profit advice
- The status as a leader and innovative in a field (for profit or without lucrative) which could benefit from the blockchain and decentralized application technology, ideally outside the existing “cryptocurrency” space.
- Experience and interest in helping for long -term fund collection efforts
- Minimal conflicts of interest (given the previous criterion, conflicts of interest is inevitable, but this means that we prefer that individuals who are either involved in non -profit activities, or whose profit activities that we can reasonably expect will not meet much with their position in Ethereum)
- Excitation and interest in decentralized technology
- Lack of behavior contrary to anterior ethics or illegal, in particular in the fields of the embezzlement of funds, initiate trade or fraud
- Diversified set of the history of industry and national and cultural history (for example. Hoping for a balance between North / South America, Europe and Asia)
If you feel that you meet most or all of these requirements or if you know someone who does, do not hesitate to send an email to kelley@ethereum.org.
